A Valentine’s Love Story for the Ages

As we celebrate those dear in our hearts this Valentine’s Day, the holiday is especially sweet for a special couple at The Gardens at Town Square in Bellevue. Bob and Eleanor Marum recently marked 75 years of marriage. This puts them in a small and select club of married couples (less than 1 percent) to celebrate a diamond anniversary.

Their married life together began on December 20, 1950. It affirms a forever love that still sees them following their passions, thriving in their community, and holding hands every day.

In the year that Bob and Eleanor wed, President Harry S. Truman was in office, the Baby Boom was in full swing, and some hit songs included “Goodnight, Irene” by the Weavers and “Tennessee Waltz” by Patti Page.

The country was still rebounding from World War II when the Korean War began in 1950. This took Bob on a tour of duty as a Forward Observer in the Army. Grateful to survive the war, he and Eleanor moved to Washington state after Bob’s service. There, Bob pursued a teaching career that led him to a role as Superintendent of Educational Service District (ESD) 121 (now called the Puget Sound ESD).

Eleanor also shared Bob’s love of education and worked as a school secretary when she was not at home with their four children — who continue to be the center of their world.

A Life of Curiosity, Travel, and Joy

Throughout all of life’s twists and turns, the Marums’ teamwork and curiosity carried them happily from one decade into the next.

For Bob, this meant becoming a travel writer later in his career and whisking Eleanor off to adventures like snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, exploring the Smithsonian in DC, and traveling to Europe’s peak sights.

Back at home, Eleanor stayed involved with her friends through activities like cards and bunco. Hobbies like golf, gardening, and walking have also kept the couple on the go — always ready to explore what’s around the next corner.

Family at the Center of Everything

A cornerstone of the Marums’ joy and vitality is their deep connection to their family. They even have a family nickname — the “Mag 8” — which includes Bob and Eleanor along with their children and spouses.

This tightly knit family unit enjoys special traditions, memorable vacations, and spending time together bonding over Seahawks games, political debates, and a shared love of good food and wine. Together, they are living proof that strong relationships can support healthy aging and happiness.

Choosing Community, Not Compromise

Deciding to downsize after 52 years in their Kingsgate home was a purposeful decision for the Marums. They knew they wanted to simplify their life. They also wanted to stay active and keep doing the things they love.

First, they moved to a Kirkland retirement community before bringing their energy and enthusiasm to The Gardens at Town Square. Today, they enjoy proximity to family, a robust community, and opportunities to pursue their interests both as a couple and as individuals.

Still Standing for What They Believe In

Now well into their 90s, Bob and Eleanor remain steadfast in their values and committed to civic engagement. Recently, they have joined resident protests to advocate for justice and democracy, heading out in rain or shine to have their voices heard.

Living in the vibrant, downtown setting of The Gardens at Town Square keeps them in the heart of Bellevue and everything it has to offer — all while having access to amenities and services that can adapt with their needs.

The Secret to 75 Years of Marriage

Today, the Marums’ daughter lovingly shares that her parents remain “super sharp, active, fit, and stubbornly independent.

We are incredibly lucky to have them in our lives as our role models for how to love deeply, laugh often, and stick together as best friends,” she says. “They still hold hands, sometimes dance, and share their wisdom from their hearts … They are incredibly special people and as a couple celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary, it makes it all so crystal clear that their longevity is a direct result of their love of each other, their family, and life in general.

This Valentine’s Day, we’re honored to celebrate Bob and Eleanor and learn from the lessons they can share.

Their story shows that life can be exciting and full of love at any and every age. Also, staying engaged and involved with friends, family, and community can play a central role — both for couples and for individuals seeking to find joy and fulfillment.
