Local Seniors & UW Nursing Faculty Team Up for Walking Revolution
Professors from the University of Washington School of Nursing Present Research & Strategies for Healthier Senior Lifestyles at Era Living Communities
On Wednesday, March 5th and Thursday, March 6th University of Washington School of Nursing Professors, Dr. Basia Belza and Dr. Hilaire Thompson present a collaborative talk to Seattle-area seniors about taking part in “The Walking Revolution” and the prevention of fall related injuries. The talk will be held at Ida Culver House Ravenna at 10:30am and at The Lakeshore in south Seattle at 2pm on March 5th, and again on March 6th at University House Issaquah at 10:30am.
Dr. Belza leads the talk with the latest research about the dangers associated with over-sitting and tips for incorporating walking in daily routines.
“For seniors, walking is the most frequent form of exercise,” says Belza. “I want to help seniors get extra walking in by taking the long way to their apartments in a retirement community, or encouraging them to visit with a friend and walk while talking rather than sitting. Scientific research shows that prolonged sitting contributes to obesity, heart disease and diabetes.”
Dr. Thompson presents the latest information about fall prevention and new strategies for successful fall recovery, including methods to improve balance and movement.
“Passion for health is a lifestyle choice that many of our residents embrace,” said Era Living Vice President of Operations, Jacob Almo. “We are excited to continually present new information that empowers seniors in our community to lead long, active and healthy lives.”
The talk is part of Era Living’s ongoing series entitled “Strategies for Successful Senior Living.” For more than 20 years, Era Living has partnered with the UW School of Nursing to collaborate on active aging and wellness programs.
